Get to know Coach "Sco"

This 2022-2023 starts the 29th year Coach Bort Escoto "Sco" has been coaching Sylmar boys basketball.  This year also marks the 37th total years coaching.  Sco's coaching career started at Cleveland HS for 6 seasons.  It was his first taste of being part of a winning tradition.  During his time there, Cleveland went to the 4A division championships twice (back to back).  Taking 2nd each year..  In those years, Divisions were decided differently.  The higher the number in the division, the larger the school and usually more competition among the athletes within the school.  That usually lead to better programs at the higher numbered divisions (ie. 1A-5A etc).  Sco started his coaching career there at Cleveland coaching the lower levels and moved his way up to Head Coach in the 6th year. 

 

After Cleveland, Sco moved to Chatsworth HS as the Varsity Assistant for 2 seasons.  Both years Chatsworth lost in the semi-finals.  It was then that Sylmar recruited him to coach the boys basketball program in 1993-1994 school year.  Coach Escoto quickly gained an affinity to the community in Sylmar and the desire to build a winning tradition here at Sylmar HS began.
