Sylmar High School School for Advanced Studies The goal of Sylmar’s School for Advanced Studies (SAS) program is to provide our students with a strong academic foundation that will ensure success at the college level. Our school is committed to instructional excellence without losing sight of our students' individual needs. Our instructors work closely with each other to reinforce concepts learned in all disciplines. A nurturing atmosphere, dedicated staff, academically rigorous classes, and a friendly student body contribute to our students' success. We are interested in students who: • Are highly-motivated • Are highly-abled • Are identified gifted • Are college bound • Have outstanding attendance • Participate in co-curricular activities • Are self-disciplined • Have good study skills We offer a wide variety of classes taught by a highly qualified staff. In order to qualify as an SAS student, you must be enrolled in at least two Honors and/or Advanced Placement classes. The course work is rigorous and requires higher level critical thinking skills. Students are expected to complete research projects, read professional journals and do term reports in academic subjects. It is highly recommended that SAS students have already passed Algebra 1 with a grade of “C” or better. The School for Advanced Studies program meets the course requirements necessary to enter any four year university. Students are encouraged to take four years of Math, Science, and English, and three years of Social Studies and Foreign Language. This is in addition to a variety of academic and encouraged electives. To prepare our students for success in college, we offer before and after school tutoring and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) preparation classes.
