Description
The major purpose of this course is to provide a balanced language arts program that emphasizes reading American Literature in depth, completing complex writing assignments, and presenting extensive oral presentations. American Literature and Composition meets the eleventh grade requirements for graduation and fulfills University of California and California State University Subject Area Requirements. It is also a prerequisite for the twelfth grade composition course. The course organization corresponds to the Reading/Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools. Students will work to improve reading, writing, listening, understanding and speaking English. Improved English language skills are an important step to growth and improvement in all other school subjects and other aspects of life. Lessons and assignments offered will prepare the students to meet or exceed the State of California Standards, improve scores on important high stakes tests including the CST and SAT and prepare them for college or other future goals.

Homework for 10 weeks of the fall semester.

Pleasure Reading.

Students must find something to read regularly that they ENJOY READING.
Students must read for homework any 2 days per week, for 30 minutes each. (3 days per week for honors students)
After each reading session, students complete a reading journal.
Journals are checked EACH FRIDAY
Books are brought to school each friday.
Students may practice extra reading sessions and journals for extra credit.

At the end of 10 weeks, students will write a report based on the 10 weeks of reading.

Students meet new people and get to know one another.
Students practice interview and notetaking techniques.
Students practice professional and polite speaking, introducing thier new friends to the class.

Grade11 students get pictures taken in English class.

Introduction to the REVOLUTION Unit.

Students read "Speech to the Virginia Convention" in thier textbooks.
Audio of an actor reading is played to assist all students.

Students identify and analyze Rhetorical Questions.

Revolution Part 2: Violence or Non-violence

Students compare arguments by Malcolm X and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. regarding the use of violence as a moral (just) tool when fighting a revolution for Civil Rights.

Unit Test scheduled for Sept 17 postponed until at least Wed Sept 22 or later, TBD.

I was out sick. Students were assigned to read the LA YOUTH newspaper for 30 minutes and complete a reading journal on loose paper, to be turned in to the substitute.
