Math Department

WELCOME

to the Math Department at
Sylmar High School
FOCUSED ON LEARNING

The math department at Sylmar High School uses "Think/Pair/Share" regularly in the classroom to encourage student collaboration and increase the use of academic language.
To implement the RTI Tier I practices, the math teachers use modeling, think aloud, encourage student engagement and utilize procedural routines to improve understanding. Students are encouraged to answer in complete sentences. Each classroom has a word wall to display new vocabulary and the teachers use writing in the math class as another measure to gage student understanding.
To monitor the student learning, the math department uses four Essential Learnings tests each semester to measure student achievement on these formative assessments.  Upon successful passing of each EL, the student is able to move on to the next unit of studies in the math core class.  The students who do not pass the test, are required to attend Intervention sessions at school to learn and practice the major concepts. After successfully attending interventions sessions, the students are able to retake the EL test and move on to another unit of study.
