The term “overrated” is often used to diminish concepts, places, roles, etc. that the speaker believes do not deserve the prestige they commonly enjoy; for example, many writers have argued that success is overrated, a character in a novel by Anthony Burgess famously describes Rome as a “vastly overrated city,” and Queen Rania of Jordan herself has asserted that “[b]eing queen is overrated.”

Attached please find the new schedule for our remote learning. My office hours are 8:00 to 9:00 am and 5:00 to 6:00 pm daily. Of course, I am available to answer 
Schoology messages and email messages at any time. Periods 1, 3 and 5 meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, while Periods 2, 4 and 6 meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students will create a portfolio of their essays: "The Company Man,"  " Affluenza" and two others. They will read each essay and write a paragraph on how the essay could be improved. They will also rewrite one of them. (Use your notes on syntax and the rhetorical triangle to discuss the improvements needed.) Your portfolio will contain:
  • Your four essays.
  • Your critique of these essays.
  • Your revision of one of them.
Remember to address the following areas on your rewrite:
  • Address rhetorical appeals: pathos, ethos, and logos.
  • Improve transitions throughout the essay.
  • Add clear evidence to support your thesis.
  • Add analysis of that evidence in a clear and concise way.
 
The critiques and rewrites must be typed. All of your work must be three holed punched and placed in a folder.

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca served as a respected officer for many years. Now he has reported to a Texas prison to serve a 3 year sentence for corruption charges. Baca lied to the FBI and tried to interfere with an investigation into allegations of abuse in the county jail system. Baca is now 77 years old and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Should this be taken into consideration with his sentence? What lesson does this experience teach us?

Homework Due- Read Chapters 8 and 9 of Frederick Douglass's narrative. Analyze his writing in terms of diction, tone, and detail. Try to write fluidly as if you are writing an essay.
 
Example-
In chapter 7 of Frederick Douglass's narrative, he vividly describes the transformation of his once "tender-hearted mistress and his former "contented" self. Through the use of diction, tone and allusion, Douglass skillfully conveys their shared loss of innocence. 
 
When describing Sophia Auld, Douglass uses the words, "pious, warm, and tender-hearted." These words allude to the qualities of a faithful Christian who always "had bread for the hungry, clothes for the naked and comfort for every mourner." She is "heavenly" and "lamblike" further adding to Douglass high regard for his kind mistress. As Douglass reminisces about her fine qualities, the reader understands his compassionate and caring tone towards the only owner who did not have the "depravity indispensable to shutting [him] up n mental darkness." However, the tone shifts as sharply as did Ms. Auld's personality. Her "lamblike disposition" became one of "tiger-like fierceness" when she came to the 'realization' that "slavery and education were incompatible with one another." Thus, Douglass further establishes his underlying claim that slavery is as devastating to the owner as it is to the slave.
