Cap and Gown

Dear Parent/Guardian and Class of 2026 Senior,

LAUSD does not require students/parents to purchase caps, tassels or gowns as a condition for participation in the graduation ceremony as it is considered to be an instructional activity. The District will provide “rental” gowns, free of charge to high school graduating seniors for use during the graduation ceremonies. You are given the option of purchasing a gown as a keepsake or receiving a District issued “rental.” The “rental” gowns will be of the same quality and color as those made available to families to purchase as a keepsake.

You have been given the option to either purchase the gown as a keepsake or receiving the District issued rental.  The rental gowns are exactly the same as the purchased gowns.

Keepsake gown price: $17.20, please pay at the Student Store in the spring anytime before graduation.

Rental Period and Return:  The gown must be returned a week after the graduation ceremony. The gown must be returned in "good" condition (*see "Acceptance Use Policy" below).  The caps and tassels do not have to be returned by the students, only the "rental" gown. Failure to return the gown in acceptable condition means the graduate must pay for the gown before receiving their diploma.

Graduation gowns are Navy, Valedictorian gowns are white. Cap and gowns will be distributed in June.

Questions: Contact Ms. Luna (A-G Counselor) at [email protected] or (818) 869-4507.

Acceptable Use Policy:*
All gowns rented for the graduation ceremony must be returned in "good" condition. California Education Code Section 48904 states that the parent/guardian of a minor is liable to the school district for all property loaned to a student  that is damaged or not returned as agreed.  In addition, the school district is authorized to withhold grades, diploma, and transcripts of a student until the student or the parent/guardian pays for the loss or damage of school property (gown). The school district will seek restitution when the school property has been damaged or lost.  Damage to the graduation gown may include but is not limited to a gown that has been cut, snagged, discolored or stained.  If a graduation gown is returned in "poor" condition, the student and/or parent/guardian will be responsible to submit payment in full to the Financial Manager in the Student Store.  There are no waivers or exceptions of the required fees for damaged gowns for any student.  Per LAUSD Policy, failure to return the rental gown or pay the necessary fees may prevent a student from receiving his/her transcripts/diploma (Ref-6486 Office of Curriculum, Instruction and School Support).
